PARIS: In response to the growing number of skirmishes along the Georgia-Soviet border, French Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy stated that France may break with tradition and operate within any NATO operation that might take place. Sources suggest that the French are preparing four squadrons of Mirage F1 and Mirage 3 fighters for forward deployment. In a statement to the Chamber of Ministers last weekend, Mauroy was quoted as saying: “For the Soviet forces to engage in such a clear and flagrant violation of international law requires a equally clear response. It is the desire of this government to maintain the strongest possible peace in the region. We see no better way to do this, than to provide our OTAN allies with the full resources that can be made available to them.”
The statement seems to have generated an overall positive response. British Prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who has already committed HMS Hermes to the region released the following statement: “We welcome our French allies to the cause of righteousness and freedom. United we are committed to the defense of international law, and the sovereignty of all nations.” Soviet General Secretary Konstantin Chernenko replied with harsh words, stating ”It is common of western rhetoric to not recognize Soviet sovereignty in favor of their own agendas. Such political maneuvering is a threat to world peace, and the Soviet Union will steadfastly defend it’s borders and it’s territory.” Soviet tanks were seen in the streets of Gantiadi yesterday. It was the first time Soviet troops were seen in the city, since the Soviet withdrawal from Georgia two years ago. The Soviet Union has also vetoed a third petition from the Georgian Prime Minister for UN Recognition. While attempts are ongoing to commit UN peacekeeping forces to the region, the likelihood that the Warsaw Pact Nations will be allowed to break rank is slim to none.
Meanwhile, Air Force Chief Of Staff General Charles Gabriel has indicated that should the need arise, the Air Force can deploy a large contingent of US forces to Georgia in under 24 hours. General Gabriel was quoted as saying “ It’s not a situation we’re hoping for, but we’re ready for it. The second we get the word to move in, the arsenal of democracy will be good to go in a split second.” Independent sources have also reported that the USS Kitty Hawk with Captain Thomas Hudner in command was sighted in the region. Previously the ship had been seen in port at Naval Station Rota where allegedly a partial propeller from a Soviet submarine was removed from her bow.
