DEPSIMS I Really Want To Do
So DCS has a big issue. Being based off Flanker 2.7 it doesn’t have a world map. Neither does BMS for that matter, but it’s still an shortcoming for a game called DCS World to NOT HAVE THE WORLD. KINDA FALSE ADVERTISING THERE EAGLE DYNAMICS! It’s Ok. It’s Fine. I’m Fine. Anyways, The following are some DEPSIM conflicts that I’ve concocted in my head and I really want to build out campaigns for, but I can’t for one reason or another.
DEPTST: Nordic Wind - Ok, You all remember how Sweden was neutral in the cold war, and Finland and that whole area wanted to stay out of it? Now what if, the Soviets took advantage of that and completely overran the majority of Scandinavia. Well Sweden isn’t out of the fight, and they’re using road bases and such and fighting a resistance style war. NATO can’t just go open conflict with the Soviets (Because Article 10 is a bitch). So here’s how ya circumvent international law. Recognize a new government in Sweden that is not the previous Swedish government. Declare war on new Swedish government. You’re not declaring war on the soviets because you didn’t recognize that they had invaded. The Soviets either have to A) Admit they invaded Ikea land, or B) do nothing and ignore NATO. Jesus how much whiskey did I drink? So very unrealistic, but not totally crazy.
DEPTST: Moirae - Ah Turkey… How I adore you constantly causing geopolitical crises. I’m not dissing on Turkey too much. Some of my early Space Camp buds were from a Turkish Military School. I do remember after one coup, one of them told me “don’t get the wrong idea. It’s just a bunch of bad generals screwing it up for everybody”. Ok let’s roll with that you’ve got something there. Turkey and Greece in the Aegean. BMS Style smackdown. I actually thought this one could happen, because there was a demo that came out for a freeware map mod that was basically the entire Aegean, and I thought “YES! PERFECT!” But that was years ago and I haven’t heard of it since. Pretty safe to assume it’s all but dead now….. And then a something weird happened. the Syria map extended West. Now all of Cyprus is high detail playable. Is there something here? Maybe. Maybe this can come back in kind of a new reworked way.
DEPTST: Falklands - This one is actually about halfway done. It was going to be DPTST 4 before Knife Fight took over. It’s a cool system. Strained logistics, and carrier fighting on the islands. South Atlantic map does a great job at feeling cold and baren. It’s a really good map. a lot of the tech we built is still under development, but It’s got promise. It did have issues with logistics. When DSMC shuts down the server for the daily persistence scripts, Ground and sea units do not maintain their course and speed. That means, there is a good chance that the ocean transports that Argentina relies on, can break at random daily. I need a fix for this system before we can start really getting into the weeds.
DEPTST: Slava Ukraine - You all knew this was coming. A small demo was designed before DPTST 3 started up showing a 1980’s era Ukraine war. It was fun, but limited in scale. If I had more Ukraine space in the Caucasus map I could make something work there. It basically played with the concept of your forces would improve the more bases you captured. It also really blended soviet and western aircraft on the front line. The base tech was reworked and found it’s way in to Knife Fight, but Slava Ukraine might come back at some point. I also kinda did it already. DPTST1 was supposed to be based around Slava Ukraine’s general concept, but it didn’t quite work out. Ironically enough, the reason I rushed DPTST1 out was because back in 2022 I was SURE, that the war in Ukraine might be over in a month. Oh what a fun feeling it was to be wrong. I actually enjoyed it for once.
DEPTST: 38th Parallel - Oh Korea. Such a perfect place for a war. This theoretical design would see both 50’s era, and 80’s era fighters face off in a classic North v. South football match. think Enigma’s but with DPTST tech. This concept has had some issues though. How do you make a F4U practical with Tomcats flying around? It’s a lot of execution issues like that which I’m working on, but it also doesn’t make sense to spend resources on a map that does not yet exist. Although Hunters over the Yalu does exist, so I guess anything is possible.
I have so very more of these rolling around in my brain. You should probably expect a part 2, but I am really all over the place right now, so if you get a chance, you should leave a comment and let me know which one of these you most want to see next.
