Operation Liberty Forge Day 1 - OPERATION BUFFALO 24

While conducting operations off the coast of the Georgian SSR, the HMAS Sydney was struck by enemy fire. Her engine room flooded almost immediately and we believe her to be operating without her primary electrical power. She is attempting to break out of the black sea as quickly as possible. In response the USS Kitty Hawk has been deployed to rendezvous with the USS Forrestal for joint operations. Forrestal has been conducting flight ops for some time and will continue doing so during Buffalo 24. In addition to the combat operations already underway in the region, CVW-20 will be conducting a Alpha Strike on Poti and Tbilisi. Recognizing that this plan is extremely ambitious, USEUCOM, Sixth Fleet, and Third Air Force, have fine tuned the strategy into a plan that successfully mitigates all significant risk factors. As such the following plan has been approved by SECDEF

B-52s out from Barksdale Air Force Base with the 11th Bomb Squadron (JIGGS) will travel to the Black Sea and enter an orbit there at which point it will be joined by the Alpha Strike Package From CVW-20 the package will consist of a SEAD Flight (FERRET), an Escort Flight (OLDS&FORD), and a Precision Strike Package (STROKE). The Alpha Strike will proceed from the rendezvous point to the Naval base at Poti and attempt to disable the base and then proceed to strike Tbilisi. However, multiple Australian POWs from the Sydney are being held at Poti, which is where the HCAS (GUNFIGHTER) squadron comes in. The Helicopters will depart from FOB London and attack targets of opportunity as well as convoys leaving the naval base. Gunfighter will secure the base for Transport Helos (SUPER) which will then deliver the Marine Special Purpose Force from the Second Marine Expeditionary Unit. They will then assault the base, recover the POWs, and then EVAC onboard SUPER to the Carrier Strike Group. The entire time that the MSPF is on the ground, GUNFIGHTER will have to defend the base from Soviet QRF, and Soviet Airborne.

Upon reaching Tbilisi the Alpha Strike will split into various elements (Jiggs one through 3). JIGGS 1 will Strike the Airbase at Vaziani. JIGGS 2 will attack the Tbilisi Industrial district, and JIGGs 3 will attack the Soviet Command Headquarters for the Area. Stroke will break off and attack specified points of interest. However, they’re precision is in name only, as they will only have time for one or two bombing passes so it’ll be in Stroke’s best interest to perform a CCIP or CCRP attack and then immediately rejoin Jiggs.

Some operational notes. The operation will start at 0800 which is early morning. There should be enough daylight when the flight groups up at 0820 to see most aircraft in the formation, but NVGs are highly recommended. Fuel is also a concern. a 28 knot thunderstorm has completely shut down RAF Mildenhall, meaning that the 100th Aerial Refueling Wing is unavailable for the mission, and VS-31 doesn’t have the range to stick with the bombers. As such, hornets, phantoms, and skyhawks are highly recommended to take as many external fuel tanks as they can, and the hornets need to watch their FPAS page like a hawk. Olds should use caution as the Airbase at Vaziani is home to squadrons of MIG-23s and MIG-21s which are a significant threat to the bombers.
