How to use the New Ground Attack Controler

Recently we added one of the most requested features for DPTST4: A Ground Mission Tasking System. Although it’s leaps ahead of anything we’ve had before, it’s also very complicated. With that in mind, lets go over a few key concepts, starting with a question. “Isn’t this the same as the JTAC system?” NO! The JTAC system is only for auto lasing targets that ground targets can see. It isn’t meant for tasking or pre planning, although it had been used for that previously. With that in mind, lets walk through the chain of events required for a mission to be successful.

Recon

Starting with the beginning, all targets have to be found by an appropriate Recon unit. Ground Recon Platoons are capable of marking targets, but in many cases they may struggle to locate targets they are not in direct contact with. Coming soon you will also be able to launch a F-14 equipped with TARPS to penetrate defenses and get a basic view of the battlefield. Alternatively you may chose to use a RQ-2 which will be slower and more vulnerable, although it will be much more effective in locating hidden targets. These options can be found in the Support Request Menu. You may also choose to escort your recon flight since they will be vulnerable right up until they return to base. Upon locating a target, the recon unit will notify a relevant command center such as “Apex” for the Western Front.

Marking

When you’re ready to go put warheads on foreheads, you’ll need to obtain a mission. There are three types of missions you can select: Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses, Battlefield Air Interdiction, and Close Air Support, or SEAD, BAI, and CAS. When a mission is available, you can select “Mark Task Locations on Map” to see the available targets on the F-10 Map, and select the one you want accordingly. You can also use “Assign Task” to have the command center pick what it thinks would be a good fit for you. Note that there’s a couple limitations to this system. One is that due to a DCS limitation, only one mission can be assigned per group. Also target data will not carry over between save periods, so you’ll need to launch recon early in order to stay ahead. Also, the mission manager may not appear in the F10 menu until it’s first target has been detected.

Attacking

When you are assigned a task by the controller, the AI will provide you with bearing and range data until you’re in area. You can also select for your target to be marked on the F-10 map. As you pick off targets, the controller will update you on how many you have left. When all Targets are killed, the task will be removed and the mission will be complete!

I hope that this clears up some confusion surrounding the new system and helps you all to do ground pounding like never before. Be sure to let us know if any bugs occur as we can’t fix em without your help
